TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA
We have selected Tuscaloosa, Alabama for our first Featured Destination! We were there twice in the last two months for business. While we were there, we checked out some accommodations and other points of interest! Tuscaloosa is located west of Birmingham and north-east of Meridian, Mississippi on Interstate 59/20. You may not think of this city as a tourist destination, but there are many accessible activities and lodgings in the area. Add to this the central location on the east-west corridor of I-20, and the fact it is very near Birmingham, and you have an excellent stop over or an inexpensive weekend destination!!! For a close by getaway, don't pass it over. If you are a University of Alabama fan, you already know about this city's charm! We also realize that while many people have unlimited or liberal travel budgets, others have a limited amount of travel funds. We are trying to feature all different types of destinations in all price ranges. Tuscaloosa is a great example of a destination that will not break your bank, but still offers a little of everything!
We stayed at the Country Inns and Suites located on McFarland Blvd. E. in Tuscaloosa. We have stayed here before, and found it to be an EXCELLENT location. The thumbnails above are of the common areas and standard disabled accessible room with king bed. Room rate was $89 plus tax per night, but I will give you a ten percent off tip later on the page (also good for other area attractions!). The Country Inns and Suites location was extremely clean, with very friendly staff and facilities that were exactly as advertised. They have received the "Qchair's Traveler Approved" award for this location! You will find above a "diamond" rating from AAA. I normally do not put much stock in these ratings, but this location has earned this! They have disabled accessible rooms with tubs and one with a true roll in shower! We have seen and stayed in this room so we know it is a true, no lip, roll in shower room with king bed. This room is reserved well in advance, so if you want to try it call ahead. The free breakfast was clean, with two attendants on duty. The selection was above that of the most continental breakfasts. Plenty of disabled parking that was level and well marked. All doors, ramps, and common areas meet ADA requirements. There are pics above of the areas. Country Inns and Suites There are other lodging options in Tuscaloosa that also offer accessible accommodations. We have used the Jameson Inn. It is also nice. The staff at the Country Inns and Suites said that their sister property, the Ramada, also had accessible rooms that had roll in showers, but since we did not stay there, we could not verify that they did have them.
The Bama Belle is a restored paddle boat that is ACCESSIBLE!! Look at the pics then check out their website for more details. A definite must do!
| Due to space limitations, we can only post a few of the things to do in Tuscaloosa. Below are a few links that you should check out for more info. Try to check out the Children's Hands On Museum if you have children, the Kentuck Festival of the Arts (third weekend in Oct.), and definitely Northpoint!
