St. Simons and Jekyll Islands

This past fall, I went on a week long trip to check out an old childhood
vacation spot.  I have not been to the area in years, so it was a natural
choice for re-exploration!  Georgia's Golden Isles actually consist of
four barrier islands, but we will concentrate on St. Simons and Jekyll
Islands.  The whole area is historically rich, naturally magnificent, and
filled with just about every activity you could imagine!  I stayed on St.
Simons Island, and made several day trips through-out the area's
attractions.  The area has changed in many ways, but to my great
surprise there were areas that were almost exactly as I remembered it
in my memories!  This time, however, it was from a wheelchair that I
was looking at things!
I stayed at the St. Simons Ocean Inns
and Suites.  This very quaint boutique
lodging is fully accessible, and offers
wheelchair accessible room with a
TRUE roll in shower!  It is not the least
expensive place to stay in the area, but
this trip was my anniversary ... So it
was a great choice!   The suite
featured hardwood floors, a great bed,
wonderful views and all the modern
amenities.  The staff and owners were
very nice and accommodating.  There
is a pool on site, but no lift.  Parking is
under the hotel, and has elevator
service to lobby and rooms.  The

St. Simons Island has grown considerably!  The area is a combination
summer destination and year round residential center, yet it has remained
the fantastic coastal community that I remember!  It offers plenty of
restaurants, shops and lodging.  The Lighthouse and Fort Frederica National
Monument are some of the many "must see" areas on the island.   I
recommend a dinner at the Georgia Sea Grill!  Although they need to
address the entrance ramp, the cuisine is well worth the effort!

Jekyll Island is like being transported to my childhood!  The island is
evolving in it's lodgings, but the beach and other parts of the island are just
like they were when I was a young boy!  The miniature golf on the island has
a beach wheelchair for no charge (just leave you DL as deposit).  It allows
the wheelchair user access to the wide expansive Atlantic beach!
Accessible beach access is marked and there is ample parking.  There has
been a modern water park added, and the convention center has expanded.
Jekyll Island is a historical treasure trove, and if you are interested in
religion it has some areas that will amaze you.  It is no wonder that the
richest people in the world use to vacation there!

Check out the links and pictures below!  This area has so much to offer and
it is well worth the look for your next getaway or vacation.  There are
sightseeing cruises, dolphin watching tours, and deep sea fishing charters.
